I have 2 kids, a girl age 11 and a boy age 8, who have been coming to this dojo for around 3-4 years. They both really enjoy all the group classes and the once a week private class.
I had an interesting experience with my daughter’s 6th grade PE teacher that I wanted to share and what she thought about karate. She wants to see strength exercises at least 2-3 times a week, such as push ups, squats, lunges, kicks exercises, etc. also some cardio exercises. But when my 11-year old daughter did her PE journal, and she just wrote karate, without any details on what she does in the class, her teacher didn’t accept it and didn’t give her any points! Shocking! What was she thinking? So it turned out that she thought we only do forms in karate, no cardio and no strength exercises, which is totally not true! I couldn’t believe it!
That’s why I’m writing this review to show that karate is no joke! It’s a serious martial art and also a great workout! I know that more people, like her PE teacher, think the same about karate, what a bad reputation for karate, which is kinda sad. So after my daughter put in more details about what she does in her karate classes, such as push-up, squats, lunges, mountain climbers, planks, sit-ups, lots of variety of kicks, etc. then her PE teacher gave her full points on those, finally!
From my perspective, taking my kids to this dojo for the past few years and watching them doing karate workout in the group classes, I felt uplifted and exhausted (in a good way) just watching them doing all the stuff they do, but at the same time, I love seeing that my kids get great results! They do varieties of warm up exercises, stretches, cardio and strength exercises, and even fun games, on top of the karate forms and self-defenses maneuvers. During their once a week private class, they go through the karate forms and self-defense forms, in more details.
So in my opinion, again, karate is no joke! Definitely no pain no gain! I don’t know about karate in other dojos, but karate in Evolution dojo in Redondo Beach is awesome! Both of my kids got great exercises, on top of learning their forms and self-defense maneuvers. They always come out very sweaty, tired, but feeling happy and great after class. They also have good things to say about their Senseis too. Kudos to Sensei Robert and Sensei Patrick! 👍
